Online learning or referred to as web-based learning is learning that takes place via a computer connected to the Internet (Vernadakis, et. Al. 2011). In the web environment lessons can require readings such as posted on web pages, downloadable files or interacting with web-based software applications that may allow viewing of demonstrations, assessments, and simulated cases. There are a large number of studies that find affirmative statistically significant effects for student learning outcomes in the online learning compared to the traditional face-to-face format. Many universities were quick to adopt the web for basic promotional marketing and public relations purposes and for the sharing of useful information when the first user friendly web browsers appeared in the early 1990s.

According to McPhail (McPhail, 2002), by 1990 the Internet was used substantially by people who had significant computer programming experience and with the creation of the World Wide Web, the mouse, icons, browsers, and search engines that were user friendly, Internet use expanded globally and rapidly. In Malaysia, the growth of online learning have been massive over the last few years as the service offers many advantages to the involved parties especially institutions and students. Mostinstitutions offers online learning to suit the demand from those who are working and at the same time eager to continue their study without having to attend the normal classes like the fulltime student.

UiTM is not being left behind and offers online learning for student known as e-PJJ. The Outdoor Education Center (Pusat Pendidikan Luar) were establish in the year of 1990 in accordance with the distance education program offering a new mode of teaching and learning practices which using the online learning. Later in the year of 2003, INeD was establish. Through the online learning students are responsible to learn on their own pace. Platform used for e-PJJ is the iclass, while the online learning resources can be various from Google Scholars, blog, Wikipedia, and also video from the YouTube. All of the resources would support the online learning and give the experience for students.

Therefore, this study is intended to determine the role of online learning for UiTM e-PJJ distance learning students.
